More than 34 countries worldwide have recently marked the 7th annual World Tai Chi and Qigong Day with free Tai Chi demonstrations and classes. Accordingly to the International Herald Tribune, London, the event aims to send positive energy around the world, as well as promoting the ancient art of Tai Chi.
Tai Chi is an ancient art originally developed in the 12th century as a combative discipline for Taoist monks, however in recent years it has steadily gained popularity in the West with recent studies vouching for its benefits in improving flexibility and mobility and counteracting the harmful effects of stress. Today it is mostly used as a means of promoting mental and physical health and bringing together mind, body and soul, rather than as a martial art, with it's slow dance-like form being seen in parks around the world. The specific movements allow a universal source of energy known as ch'i to flow through the body, creating balance and harmony. Tai Chi often incorporates a series of exercises known as Qigong which are designed to clear the body's energy channels (meridians), preventing energy blockages which can lead to ill-heath.
Perhaps the best thing about Tai Chi is that it can be practised easily in the comfort of your own home by all ages, from children to seniors, and requires no special equipment. Why not give it a try today and see the benefits for yourself!
