| New Age revelers greet summer solstice at Stonehenge |

As the sun rose on Wednesday June 21st, around 19,000 New Age followers, Druids and keen on-lookers and party-goers marked the summer solstice at Stonehenge in the UK. As the sun peeked through the clouds at 0358GMT, they gathered dancing and drumming around the ancient stone formation to usher in the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere.
Stonehenge is located in England's south-west and was built between 3000 B.C. and 1600 B.C. Some experts say the stones were aligned with the sun as part of an ancient sun-worshipping culture, whilst others believe the monument was built as part of an astronomical calendar. Either way, Stonehenge is now a major tourist attraction with the rocks themselves having great spiritual significance for druids and New Age followers. |
