According to the Lexington Herald-Leader, a new law came into force on 15th July 2006 in the state of Kentucky, USA, marking acupuncture as a regulated form of medical care. The new law makes Kentucky the 44th US state to regulate the practice of acupuncture via the Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure, the same group that monitors medical doctors and assistants.
Prior to the introduction of this new law, there was no regulation in place to help patients feel confident in the practitioners they were visiting. Under the new law however, all practitioners must have partaken in at least 1800 hours of education from an accredited acupuncture training program and have passed a national certification exam from the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. All existing acupuncture practitioners have until July 2007 to meet the new requirements.
It is estimated that there are currently only 18 acupuncturists practicing in Kentucky, however the number is likely to increase as a result of the new law. There are now only 6 US states with no regulation of the practice in place, and these are Mississippi, Alabama, North Dakota, South Dakota, Oklahoma and Wyoming. |
