| At the time of this incident, we were a newly emigrated young family living on a farm property completely isolated from civilisation. As we lived so far from town my two oldest children had to have correspondence school with me as their teacher, which was not a good thing believe me. Teaching maths was not easy for me as I had never managed to grasp this subject at school myself and now I had to teach an 8 and 6 year old, and to make things worse, my two youngest of 2 and 1 years would often get in the way wanting to play with their siblings. |
| We were so poor that often all my family had was homemade bread and vegemite for their evening meal. |
| One day feeling thoroughly disheartened with our lot, I began to recollect all the magical events that had occurred to my mother and I when we were in any kind of trouble. It seemed that often wonderful things had occurred after we had "put our situation to the Lord", as my mother would say. |
| I told my children about their grandmother's belief in prayer and they were excited, as they firmly believed that God would see how hungry and poor we were and come to our aid immediately. Therefore, in an attempt to lift my children's spirits, we prayed for a miracle. |
| Soon after this small attempt at making the power of prayer work for us, I was busy working hard in the laundry doing the family wash. Now this was no easy task as I had to wash the clothes in an old fashioned boiler with not a smidgin of washing powder, therefore this process entailed much scrubbing with a brush to eliminate the dirt. |
| My day had already been marred by a demand for money from an irate financer. |
| Unfortunately my husband had the habit of buying things on hire purchase and never paying for them, and I often found myself promising these people money that was never forthcoming as a way of keeping him out of jail. So, more than anything at that particular time was the need for some kind of miracle to happen which would at least lift these feelings of despair that I and the children were experiencing. |
| It was then I heard the children's voices in the distance, sounding very animated and excited, and as they came closer I could hear one of them shouting "Mummy, mummy come quickly and see what we have found". |
| I ran out thinking they might have found a sick animal of which they were fond of doing, but instead, their hands were full of mushrooms! I was elated for at least we would have something different to eat. My children were so happy that it was hard for them to get a word out coherently. Finally, I managed to establish that the mushrooms covered the whole back paddock from one fence to the other. |
| As this was a rather hot part of South Australia, I had never heard of such a thing and was totally amazed! Then just as I had sent all four of them back with a bucket to gather some more of these mushrooms for tea, one of the farm workers arrived in his truck. |
| "Here missus," he said, "the boss reckons you could use this hey"! Then from the back of the truck he pulled out a side of lamb, already trimmed and tidied up ready for cooking. |
| I was thrilled, for now the children would be able to eat reasonably well until our next payday, but that was not all! For later in the day, when my husband came home from work he had a box in his arms full of Jams and Marmalades. These he had found sitting on a post at the entrance to our driveway. They were obviously a gift from some kind soul who had known of our predicament. |
| So now, we had meat and mushrooms for tea, and dripping from the meat to spread on homemade bread; in addition, there were jams and marmalades to add some flavour, and my tiny family had just learned a lesson in the answer to prayer! |
